What it Means to Be a Step Grandparent

Many families in the present have a step parent in most cases this means there will be step grandparents as well. If you have a child that has remarried someone who has children of their own this will make you a step grandparent. This can also be the case if you have remarried and your spouse has his/her own grandchildren. These situations can be brought about by divorces as well as deaths in the family. Most people get confused at first on how exactly they should act or even where they actually fit in the family. And because of this it is important to spend time with your step grandchildren to get in touch with how you feel about the new circumstance.

You should have the will to make time to build good relationships with the step grandchildren. You should first find out how you feel about the situation in order to be a better step grandparent. It is also good to know how the rest of the family members feel. Even though you may want a relationship with your step grandchild they may not want the same. This is mostly because the grandchild may feel that you are trying to replace their old grandparents.

The step grandchild may still be upset about the divorce and it is important to be carefully when dealing with them. The step grandchild may also be getting used to having new siblings as well as other relatives. All these changes may overwhelm the child. It is easier to get close to the young step grandchildren because they may not be aware of what is happening in the family and they will warm up to you quickly. If you adore them they will also adore you.

Teenagers may be the most difficult to connect with because their minds are mostly set on other things such as school, friends as well as other relatives. Other may think you are invading the family. If one of these situations happen to you do not take them personally and do not give up as well. Do not push it if the child is not ready just be patient and wait for the step grandchild to come to you and make sure you are there when he/she is ready. You may decide that you are not ready to connect with your step grandchild at the moment and it is good to be honest with yourself.

You are supposed to be there to listen if their parents need to talk. You should also be sure that the parents approve of your relationship. It is also important not to criticize the parent's parenting skills. You can also ask other step families how they have succeeded. Respect the relationship of your step grandchild with his/her other grandparents. Sometimes the grandparents may feel jealous because of the time you may be spending with the step grandchild and it is good to put yourself in their shoes. You should talk with the other grandparents to make sure they are ok with your relationship with their grandchild.
